We Had TWO Turkeys?! The Freezer Cleanout That Changed How We Grocery Shop 😂
Have you ever opened your freezer and thought, “There is absolutely no room in here!”…and then headed to the grocery store to buy more food? 😂

That was us.
Scott and I had a freezer that was jam-packed and a cupboard that was practically bursting at the seams. Every time we brought home groceries, the new stuff went in front, on top, or wherever we could squeeze it in.
And the stuff in the back? Well…some of it stayed there a little too long.
I finally decided enough was enough. Food is way too expensive to be throwing it away simply because we forgot we had it!
So, I started with the cupboard. I pulled everything out, tossed a few things that were past their prime, checked expiration dates, and moved anything that needed to be used soon right to the front.
Then I tackled the freezer. Oh. My. Goodness.
I emptied it, took inventory, and made a list of everything we already had. It was crazy to see how much food was actually hiding in there!
For the past couple of months, we’ve been “eating through our freezer.” We’ve still purchased groceries and a few proteins here and there, of course, but nothing like we were buying before. Instead, I’m trying to plan meals around what we already have so we can use it up and eventually start fresh—with a better plan this time!
And that brings me to tonight’s dinner.
I discovered we had two turkeys in the freezer. TWO! 😂 So this week I pulled one out, and tonight we had the best turkey dinner—turkey, stuffing, and broccoli. Nothing fancy, but boy was it good!
And there’s something especially satisfying about knowing the main part of dinner was already sitting right there in our freezer waiting for us.
So here’s my Kim’s Kitchen Challenge for you:
Go peek in the back of your pantry. Dig down into that freezer. Check your spices and expiration dates. Pull out a few things you’ve forgotten about and plan a meal around them this week.
You might be surprised by how much food—and how many meals—you already have!
I feel so much better about our food stock now. We’re wasting less, buying more intentionally, and slowly getting to the point where we can start over with a much better system.
And apparently…you don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving for a really good turkey dinner! 🦃❤️
Now I want to know: What’s the oldest or most surprising thing you’ve found hiding in the back of your freezer? 😂
