A Little Gift for Our Feathered Friends! š¦
DIY Birdseed Ornaments ā A Fun Handmade Gift for Any Season

Sometimes the simplest handmade gifts are the sweetest!
This past spring, I hosted my Create & Gift Kids Workshop, where we made special handmade gifts for Mother's Day and Father's Day. One of our projects was an adorable birdseed ornament, and it was such a fun creation!
We used bird-shaped cookie cutters, birdseed, and a few simple ingredients to create ornaments that could be hung outside for our feathered friends to enjoy.
Why I'm Sharing This Now
I've been posting regularly here on my blog, and one of my goals is to make kimwolff.net a helpful resource for the creative projects we've enjoyed together.
Whether you've attended one of my classes and want to recreate a project or you're looking for something new to make, I hope you'll find plenty of inspiration here!
Although we originally made these ornaments for Father's Day, wouldn't they make adorable Christmas gifts? š They're also a wonderful winter activity or a fun project to save for next spring.
š¦ DIY Birdseed Ornament Recipe
Ingredients ā One Batch
2 packets unflavored gelatin
½ cup warm water
2 cups birdseed
Additional Supplies
Bird-shaped cookie cutters (or any fun shape!)
Parchment paper
Baking sheet
Twine or string
Straw or skewer for making hanging holes
Let's Get Creating!
Prepare the gelatin. In a mixing bowl, combine the 2 packets of unflavored gelatin with ½ cup warm water. Stir until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
Add the birdseed.Ā Stir in 2 cups of birdseed, mixing thoroughly until the seeds are evenly coated.
Fill your cookie cutters.Ā Place your cookie cutters on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Spoon the birdseed mixture into each cutter, pressing firmly to fill all the little spaces.
Make a hanging hole.Ā Use a straw or skewer to create a hole near the top of each ornament. Be sure to leave enough space around the hole so it doesn't break when hanging.
Let them dry.Ā Allow your ornaments to dry completely and become firm. This may take 24ā48 hours, depending on their thickness and humidity.
Add your twine.Ā Carefully remove the ornaments from the cookie cutters, thread twine through the holes, and tie a knot.
Your birdseed ornaments are ready to hang outside or package as thoughtful handmade gifts!
š” Kim's Crafting Tip!
One standard box of unflavored gelatin contains 4 packets, so you can make TWO batches with one box!
That's a total of:
4 packets unflavored gelatin
1 cup warm water
4 cups birdseed
Perfect when you're crafting with a group of kids or making several gifts!
Be sure to press the mixture firmly into your cookie cutters and allow the ornaments to dry completely before removing them.
For our feathered friends, use plain birdseed without added salt or flavorings. Hang the ornaments in a cool, shaded outdoor location, and replace them if they become wet or moldy.
